Positive Behaviour Support in Ipswich, QLD
NDIS participants can access Positive Behaviour Support in Ipswich, Queensland, by making an online referral on our website. Living outside a major capital city comes with many benefits, from fresh air and green grass to the quiet stillness and close-knit communities. Although idyllic, living in regional Queensland can come with the challenge of trying to access NDIS supports that might not be easily found in smaller communities.
Our mission is to make Positive Behaviour Support easier to access, and one way we do this is by not relying on a physical office, but rather, we support our team to work remotely so they can make a difference in their local communities.
In 2021, we expanded from New South Wales to Queensland and we’re grateful that we can provide Positive Behaviour Support in many areas across Queensland including Ipswich.
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
You may be familiar with psychology, occupational therapy or speech pathology, but Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) might be a support that you’ve never heard of. PBS is a support which is accessed by NDIS participants to improve their quality of life.
Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach which improves a person’s quality of life by building new support strategies, skills and behaviours to meet their needs and goals.
Behaviour support practitioners consider what is important to a person, including their needs, routines, values, strengths and any behaviours which may be worrying them. They work with the person they are supporting and the person’s support team to create a person-centred Positive Behaviour Support plan (PBS plan).
In their PBS plan, their behaviour support practitioner will include strategies to support them, and if funding allows, they will include training to help implement strategies. Training can extend to providing support to your care team, such as teachers, support workers, day program and aged care providers.
How can Ipswich NDIS participants benefit from Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support can improve your quality of life in ways that matter to you. A few examples are listed below.
Positive Behaviour Support can support your education
Positive Behaviour Support can support school-aged children as well as adults who are engaging in tertiary or other learning. For example, if you live with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and are studying at university, an example of a behaviour of concern might be that you move around the room frequently, inadvertently causing disruption.
Your behaviour support practitioner will help identify why you might be moving around frequently, and provide strategies to support you. It might be that you’re moving around to avoid bright light, or that the air conditioning may be very uncomfortable. It could be because you have difficulty hearing or processing information and are looking for the most optimal place to sit.
PBS strategies might include visiting a classroom before the semester begins, to find the most suitable place to sit. Another strategy may include your support worker attending class with you or training for your lecturers so they know how to use your communication book.
Positive Behaviour Support can help families
If you’re a parent of a child with a disability, Positive Behaviour Support can help not only your child but also have an impact on your family and how you live your day-to-day lives. For example, if your child has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and they struggle to stay seated in the car or keep their seatbelt on, this might make it challenging to leave the house as a family and/or cause distress to other family members.
Your child’s behaviour support practitioner will collect information (such as your observations), to help them understand why your child may be moving around the vehicle or why they are removing their seatbelt. They may then suggest strategies to support your child such as a social story about travel safety or strategies to foster emotional regulation — PBS strategies will always vary, as they are specific to every individual.
Positive Behaviour Support can improve access to healthcare and other NDIS services
Positive Behaviour Support can also improve your child’s access to healthcare and other NDIS services. For example, if your child has an intellectual disability and experiences significant distress or absconds when visiting the doctor or dentist, your behaviour support practitioner will seek to identify why they may be experiencing distress and provide strategies that may assist.
