How can Positive Behaviour Support help?
If you live with a disability or you care for a person with a disability, Positive Behaviour Support can help you. We support NDIS participants with a wide range of disabilities and diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, physical disability, anxiety or personality disorders, acquired brain injury and more.
Positive Behaviour Support helps address behaviours of concern, such as verbal aggression, physical aggression towards others, self-injurious behaviour, sensory sensitivities, managing changes in routine, pica, impulsivity, social withdrawal and more.
Positive Behaviour Support and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Here’s an example of what to expect from your behaviour support practitioner and how Positive Behaviour Support can help:
Charlie is six years old and has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. At school, Charlie often wanders from his assigned activity and has frequently left his classroom unexpectedly. Charlie has frequently left the school premises and run away from staff when they have tried to assist him. Charlie’s parents and teachers are concerned for his safety and well-being, particularly as their school is near the Hume Highway.
Charlie’s behaviour support practitioner would review Charlie’s historical documents, such as reports from his psychologist, paediatrician and occupational therapist. His behaviour support practitioner would engage with Charlie, to talk about what is important to him or what may be worrying him.
Charlie’s behaviour support practitioner would also meet with his family and school staff and complete assessments and observations at school and home. An example of an assessment might be a checklist that teachers complete each day. Other assessments can be more complex, and Charlie’s behaviour support practitioner will provide support throughout the process.
Charlie’s behaviour support practitioner will seek to identify why Charlie is absconding and will define proactive and reactive strategies to support Charlie. The strategies implemented will depend on Charlie’s specific needs, goals, and the reasons for his behaviour, however some examples of PBS strategies that might be included in Charlie’s behaviour support plan (PBSP) are:
- Ensuring his teacher communicates when a transition will occur, by providing a 10 minute, 5 minute and 1 minute reminder.
- Using visuals to help Charlie identify the routine for the day.
- Scheduling challenging activities for the start of the day.
- Providing Charlie with strategies and tools to self-regulate, such as headphones, a sensory tent or another quiet space.
- Utilising a communication board designed specifically for Charlie, to aid communication between Charlie, his teacher and support staff.
Positive Behaviour Support can improve the quality of life of children and adults on the autism spectrum, as well as individuals with other disabilities. Specific strategies will always be person-centred and will vary depending on a person’s needs and goals. This is where your behaviour support practitioner can help. Make a referral anytime.
