Positive Behaviour Support in South East Melbourne

We support NDIS participants with person-centred Positive Behaviour Support, helping individuals improve quality of life in a way that is important to them.

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) transforms quality of life by building new support strategies, skills and behaviours to meet a person’s needs and goals.

Your behaviour support practitioner will seek to understand your existing routines, values, social connections and personal strengths. They also seek to understand your needs and goals and behaviours that might be challenging.

We build a PBS plan with you and your team to help you live your best life. Here’s a short video where Belinda explains Positive Behaviour Support:

Who can benefit from Positive Behaviour Support in South East Melbourne?

Positive Behaviour Support transforms the quality of life of individuals living with disability.

We support individuals of all ages, including children, teenagers, adults and seniors with intellectual disabilities, psychosocial disabilities, cognitive, neurological or physical disabilities.

Most of our clients are NDIS participants located throughout Australia, however we also support individuals who are not able to access the NDIS.

How can Positive Behaviour Support improve quality of life?

Your behaviour support practitioner will work with you to identify what is important to you and how they can help you achieve your goals. When required, we help reduce restrictive practices and help with crisis situations, and other times we support individuals, families and communities to achieve goals such as creating more independence, greater fulfilment, stronger relationships and easier access to the community.

Here’s an example of how Positive Behaviour Support can improve quality of life:

Peter, aged 26

One of Peter’s favourite pastimes is building birdhouses at his weekly woodworking class, however he experiences a few challenges when it comes to travelling to the workshop. Once Peter is ready to go to the workshop, he often refuses to get into the car, pushing away his carer.
The role of Peter’s behaviour support practitioner is to understand why Peter is pushing away his carer, that is, what is Peter trying to communicate? Peter’s behaviour support practitioner might identify that Peter is reluctant to travel to his workshop by car due to the heat: the car is often parked in the sun and Peter becomes very uncomfortable when he enters the car and sits on the hot leather seats.
Peter’s behaviour support practitioner might suggest small changes to help Peter’s comfort level, such as parking the car in the garage or under shade, placing a blanket on the chair and cooling the car before Peter gets in.

Identifying what a person is trying to communicate through behaviours of concern is usually more complex. Your behaviour support practitioner will use evidence-based approaches including observation, interviews and assessments.

Collaboration is also a key part of Positive Behaviour Support — your behaviour support practitioner will work in partnership with you and your support team, including family, carers, medical and allied health providers, support workers, accommodation and aged care providers.
