What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is all about improving your quality of life by seeking to understand you, your life and the reasons for your behaviour so that the important people in your life may be better able to meet your needs.

We work with you and the important people in your life, including family, support workers, teachers, accommodation providers and other members of your support team to learn and understand what you’re communicating through your behaviour and identifying more suitable ways of expressing these feelings and thoughts.

What you can expect from Positive Behaviour Support in Melbourne

What is our approach to Positive Behaviour Support in Melbourne?

Our team at Ability Consultants takes a person-centred and evidence-based approach to Positive Behaviour Support. This means that you are the centre of your support: we consider your needs, your quality of life, and your goals and we proactively seek your input into your assessments and throughout the delivery of your service.

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based practice; this means we consider scientific evidence when planning and conducting assessments and observations, as well as when we analyse data and define behaviour support strategies.

As a registered NDIS Provider, we are guided by and go beyond the Positive Behaviour Support standards outlined by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

What does Positive Behaviour Support involve?

Depending on your needs, your behaviour support practitioner might complete an Interim Behaviour Support Plan or a Behaviour Assessment Report and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan. Below I briefly outline what to expect if your practitioner is working towards completing a Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan (CBSP) with you.

Initial meeting

When you start Positive Behaviour Support, your behaviour support practitioner will get in touch to organise an initial meeting, where you can get to know each other and identify your goals and talk about the best way forward. Ideally, this meeting will take place in person at a place convenient to you, such as your home.

Observations, assessments and interviews

Depending on your needs, your behaviour support practitioner might carry out observations, assessments and interviews, which can be formal or informal. Formal observations have more structure than informal observations and might involve small tasks like keeping track of when or how often a behaviour occurs.

Your PBS practitioner will also review reports and documents you provide from your support team such as from your GP, psychologist, occupational therapist, school etc.

This information helps to inform a functional behaviour assessment.

Functional Behaviour Assessment

Your behaviour support practitioner will use the information collected to determine the reasons for the behaviour occurring, this is called the function of behaviour.

An example of a function of behaviour is that a person might become verbally aggressive because they’re trying to communicate that their seat belt is too tight. This person may not have the skill or ability to communicate this discomfort in a suitable way. The function of the behaviour is that they are trying to communicate their discomfort and they are using their behaviour to communicate this.

Behaviour support plan

Your behaviour support practitioner will work with you to create a person-centred Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP), guided by the Functional Behaviour Assessment. Your PBS plan will include a summary of behaviours of concern and provide positive proactive and reactive strategies, as well as recommendations on how to implement these changes to improve your quality of life.

Training and coaching

Ideally, your NDIS funding will provide enough resources to cover training and coaching, which is where your behaviour support practitioner teaches you and your support team how to implement your behaviour support plan. Training and coaching can take place in person, or even through video calls. All training is customised to suit you and the support team and can include resources such as videos and step-by-step guides.

What does behaviour support look like? What can I expect from my PBS practitioner in Melbourne?

Our behaviour support practitioners in Melbourne will work closely with participants and all stakeholders to create a plan that is person-centred and best practice. This could include adjusting routines or environments, building communication or coping strategies and coaching the family/support workers on consistent responses. A focus is on stress reduction, addressing unmet needs, improving quality of life and showing the utmost respect for the participant.

You can learn more about what to expect from PBS in our article, “What to expect from our Positive Behaviour Support service: PBS questions and answers”.

Can you help with a Functional Behaviour Assessment in Melbourne?

Ability Consultants can write Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA). This assessment is the foundation of a quality behaviour support plan, giving insight into what is happening before and after the behaviour, the environment, along with what the person’s communication, sensory needs and skills are. From this, a hypothesised function of the behaviour is given, which allows for tailored strategies and skill building that actually addresses the behaviour, rather than reacting to it.

I think my child (or the person I support) is affected by Restrictive Practices (RP) — do behaviour support practitioners in Melbourne provide support around RPs?

Ability Consultants will provide support around Restrictive Practices. This is to ensure they are only used when absolutely necessary, are lawful, and are being actively reduced over time.
