Are you an NDIS participant looking for a psychologist in Sydney?

If you’re an NDIS participant looking for a psychologist, we can help you. We provide support in Sydney, Brisbane and throughout NSW and QLD.

Psychology services for NDIS participants

We can help improve your quality of life by providing therapy services and/or psychological assessments. Our psychologists can help with a wide range of diagnoses, such as intellectual disabilities, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, trauma, personality disorders, traumatic and acquired brain injuries and more.

Therapy

Our psychologists will work with you and your support team to clarify your goals and how we can help you.

For example, if you have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and find it difficult to develop and maintain relationships, your psychologist can help you develop skills to improve your relationships with others.

If you’re in need of therapy, during your first session, your psychologist will help you identify the goals of your therapy. A goal might be that you would like to develop your social and interpersonal skills. Your psychologist will then develop a therapy plan with you for the course of your NDIS plan.

Your therapy plan might include fortnightly or monthly sessions and a description of what each session might look like. Your psychologist will also review your therapy goals with you throughout these sessions. Following therapy, we will provide you with a confidential psychological recommendation report to help you with future support and NDIS funding.

We can provide psychotherapy including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Therapy to improve executive functioning (e.g. impulse control, emotion control, flexible thinking, working memory, self-monitoring, planning and prioritisation, task initiation, organisation).

Psychological assessments

We can also support you by carrying out psychological assessments that may help you improve your quality of life. Psychological assessments we can help NDIS participants with include assessments of:

  • Cognitive functioning
  • Adaptive functioning
  • Diagnosable mental health issues.

For example, if you’re a parent and your child needs a cognitive assessment for a suspected intellectual disability, our psychologists can administer a Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - 5th Edition (WISC-V) and an Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System - 3rd Edition (ABAS-3). These assessments can help us assess their level of intellectual and adaptive functioning. Adaptive functioning includes daily living skills such as skills in the following areas: communication, community use, functional academics (reading, using numbers), school/home living, health and safety, leisure, self-care, self-direction, and social. Following the assessment, your psychologist will provide you with results and recommendations in a psychological report.

Alternatively, if you are an NDIS participant and you are beginning to have concerns that your memory is deteriorating, we can provide you with support. Your psychologist can assess your memory by administering the Wechsler Memory Scale - 4th Edition (WMS-IV). Following the assessment, we will provide you with results and recommendations in a psychological report.

Positive behaviour support

As an NDIS provider, our psychologists can also provide positive behaviour support. Find out more about positive behaviour support here.

Where our psychologists work

There’s no need for you to travel to a clinic — we come to you!

We provide psychology support to NDIS participants throughout Greater Sydney, from the northern beaches through to outer, inner and north west of Sydney. Whether you’re based in Manly, Fairfield, Rouse Hill or Moore Park, it’s likely we can provide you with support.

If you’re located outside of metropolitan Sydney, we can provide psychology services through telepractice, which involves meeting through phone and/or video calls. We also offer psychologist support in Queensland.

At times, we can offer you both modes of support — sometimes meeting in person and other times remotely through telepractice.

Funding for NDIS psychology support in Sydney

Our psychologists work under the NDIS framework which is an Australian government scheme to support people with disabilities. We can also support individuals who are not NDIS Participants and who are able to privately pay for services. We do not provide psychology services through Medicare.

NDIS funding for psychology

The NDIS provides funding for psychology services to support participants improve their independence and functional capacity. Examples of functional capacity include communication and self care. Examples of self care include being able to brush your teeth, attend appointments and prepare your meals. NDIS participants can access the Improved Daily Living support category under the Capacity Building budget.

You can also use the Improved Relationships support category for psychology and/or positive behaviour support. Where there is neither Improved Relationships or Improved Daily Living available, you can use Core funds for both positive behaviour support and psychology.

It’s important to note that the NDIS doesn’t provide financial support for every type of psychological support needed.

Privately funded support

If you’re not an NDIS participant, we can provide you with psychology services, tailored to your needs. At Ability Consultants, fees for NDIS participants and private clients are the same, whether you live in Sydney or elsewhere in Australia. If you’re a privately funded client in Sydney, you’ll receive an invoice each week.

We do not provide psychology services through Medicare.

For more information about which types of psychological services the NDIS does not fund, please see our article below.

Psychologist availability

Currently, our website shows the wait time for positive behaviour support. Wait times for psychology services are different, and we hope to provide weekly updates on our website in the near future.

At the moment, wait times for psychologists will depend on your needs and goals, as well as the location and availability of the psychologist near you. For some clients, there is a wait time of one week, whereas others may have a longer wait time.

To find out more about psychologist availability in Sydney or Brisbane, please make a referral and we’ll provide you with more information.

How to make your NDIS psychology referral

If you’re an NDIS participant, you can make a referral on our website. We’ll ask for information that we need to create your service agreement and information that will help us assess if we are the right fit for your needs.

We’ll contact you for further information for your psychologist, for example, relevant medical history, consent and where the service you would like to meet with your psychologist (e.g. home, school, day program, hospital).
