Meet Sue Arthur, Behaviour Support Practitioner in Goulburn

Hi Sue, welcome to our team of behaviour support practitioners in NSW! Tell us about you!

Hi and thanks for the opportunity to share. I am very grateful for the role that I now work in and am also grateful for the very supportive training team at Ability Consultants . The resources for learning have been great and I can apply much of it to everyday learning and growing in this new role.

My husband and I moved from the Illawarra region, to the Southern Tablelands 4.5 years ago, after deciding we would like farm life. We bought a small farm, with very little knowledge of all that would be required to successfully manage land and animals. To say it was a “steep learning curve” is an understatement!

Fast forward and we have managed to get a handle on how to look after our own small herd of alpacas and sheep, as well as breed and sell animals for others to enjoy.

This has led to many new friendships with other farmers in our small community of Parkesbourne. Each of those we have met and received advice or help from are very generous country people, who are only too pleased to help. We too have had the privilege of being a helping hand to neighbouring properties at times.

Tell us about life in Goulburn — what do you love most about life in the Southern Tablelands?

We both love the fact that our own children and grandchildren love to come and visit with us. The children love to help with the animals, especially the hand-feeding experiences of some of our friendlier animals. Collecting fresh eggs from the chickens and helping “Pa” on the tractor, or riding through a paddock to collect firewood are other highlights of their stays.

Our family loves camping, so each of our children have their own camping setup which they bring with them to set up camp on our land, cook on the open fire and catch up over a slow dinner or breakfast.

We also have a cosy little cottage on our property, for hire, where people can stay and enjoy the B&B experience on a farmstay holiday.

You have extensive experience in the Early Childhood sector, tell us more about this.

I have worked in various roles in the Early childhood sector for over 25 years. I began as an assistant to the Special Needs coordinator of a preschool in the Sutherland Shire, progressing through my studies to become an Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) specialising in Early Intervention and Inclusion support.

I learnt many useful skills and strategies over the years and had the privilege of doing one of my practicums with an occupational therapist (OT) at another well-established preschool in the Sutherland Shire. The skills and methods which I learnt alongside the OT enhanced my own practice of working with small groups of children at my own place of work. There, I developed a program where groups of children could participate in sensory and movement experiences that supported their need for more individualised sessions which enhanced their ability to participate meaningfully in their classrooms.

Having worked in early intervention and inclusion support, what are some key lessons you’ve learnt that influence your approach to supporting children and adults as a behaviour support practitioner in Goulburn?

  • I have learnt that it’s important to get to know each individual child and their likes, dislikes, interests and needs. This applies to any age group — people need personal connection. Sometimes that requires more intentional, one-to-one connection so the person feels they are “seen”. This is such a vital point in younger children especially, as what they hear and perceive in their formative years plays a huge part in how they perceive themselves and their identity.
  • It’s also important not to assume we know everything about a person, even when we have been connecting with them for a long time. There are always new things to know and learn along the journey of learning.
  • Look for the moments of joy! Sometimes these can just be small “glimmers” — small moments in time where a connection has been made that is very meaningful and reveals that something positive has changed that will enhance that person’s life.

For participants thinking about Positive Behaviour Support in Goulburn, how would you explain Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support is always person-centred. It has a unique role of supporting people of varying abilities to live their best life, by working with them to achieve their own quality of life goals.

How does Positive Behaviour Support tie in with other supports a person might be engaged with, such as psychology, occupational therapy, psychiatry or even school?

As a behaviour support practitioner, it’s important that I take a multidisciplinary approach, where each individual, support person or agency contributes in a positive and collaborative way, through communication with the client and their family. This ensures that the client can be confident they are receiving the best help, and that their plan reflects that their voice and their personal goals are being heard and supported, to achieve successful outcomes.
